The Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation will host their fifth annual “Excellence in Education” banquet on April 25th at Elm Street Grill. Social hour begins at 5 PM with the program and meal to begin at 6 PM.
This year, the two recipients of the alumni of the year award are: Chuck Offenburger (Class of 1965) and Roger Scarbrough (1970). They have both made their marks in their respective fields. Here’s a little bit more about each of them.
Chuck Offenburger, of Jefferson and Des Moines, has been writing about Iowans for 65 years (he started as a sportswriter for the old Evening Sentinel when he was 13 in his hometown of Shenandoah). He’s been wearing his trademark black & white saddle shoes even longer than that.
For 26 years, he wrote the “Iowa Boy” column and other stories for the Des Moines Register. He was co-host of RAGBRAI – the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa – for 16 of those years. He was also well-known for his coverage of the Persian Gulf War in 1990 & ’91, the career of Iowa-born opera great Simon Estes, and his Top Ten rankings of Iowa’s best cinnamon rolls.
He writes the "Iowa Boy Chuck Offenburger" blog and is a member of the Iowa Writers' Collaborative. He and his wife Mary Riche also operate the internet site www.Offenburger.com.
Roger Scarbrough is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Scarbrough Global, a Kansas City–based logistics and global trade services company he co-founded with his wife, Jeannie, in 1984. Scarbrough Global has grown into a comprehensive supply chain solutions provider with offices in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the Netherlands.
From 1995 to 2002, Roger served as President and CEO of United Shipping, an international network of more than 140 freight forwarders and customs brokers operating in over 85 countries. During his tenure, he helped strengthen global collaboration across the logistics sector and expanded opportunities for independent providers worldwide.
Roger began his career serving two years in the U.S. Army before earning a degree in Business from Northwest Missouri State University.
A Licensed Customs Broker and Certified Customs Specialist, Roger has long been active in advancing the global trade and logistics profession. He supports several industry organizations, including the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), KC SmartPort, and the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA).
With more than 40 years of experience in international trade, logistics, and compliance, Roger remains a respected voice in the industry and continues to guide Scarbrough Global’s strategic vision and long-term growth.
In addition to recognizing Offenburger and Scarbrough, the foundation will recognize their staff Spirit Award winners, staff service awards, be entertained by the talent of Shenandoah High School music students and the meal will be assisted by the Shenandoah FFA.
