In gratitude for a bountiful harvest and for all that the Shenandoah schools do for our people and f

Hello, Shenandoah!

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, all rolled into one update from your Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation president.

I have the opportunity to “do some farming” outside of my “real job” -- I'm regional vice-president for southwest Iowa for Farm Credit Services of America. Harvest time is always my favorite time of the year as we farmers finally have the chance to see the “fruits of our labor” for the season.

This year’s grain yields were again outstanding in southwest Iowa due to Mother’s Nature’s frequent rainstorms this summer, and those great yields make for happy farmers harvesting that crop. Our harvest was a little later this year than most due to a very wet October. So this year most of us were not done until Thanksgiving. But as usual, things always get done on the farm before winter. We turned the calendar to December, and thoughts of Christmas and all those great and cherished family times started entering our thoughts and plans.

Corby Fichter, president of the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation, speaks at the Nov. 15 American Education Week reception, which the foundation helped sponsor.

Thanksgiving and Christmas remind me of how thankful we should be and how blessed we are as well. It is a time for us to think about those around us that are not as fortunate and could really use a little help during this season. Whether that help is a little extra cash, a gift, or just a really sincere hug to let them know we care, it can truly make a difference to those around us.

When you get a chance this season to make a difference to a friend, a co-worker, or a person at the grocery store, do whatever you can to make their day! You will be blessed by your generosity more than you can ever imagine.

Our foundation has been blessed this year with many donations and contributions to help us begin building a financial endowment to provide resources for our teachers and students in the Shenandoah Community Schools.

We want to again take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support as we begin some new traditions at our school. I was reminded this week that every $100, $250, $500 – whatever size of donation is given to our foundation – truly makes a difference. We absolutely love and are so thankful for the “larger gifts,” too, but we know it’s the smaller gifts from many, many people that make a foundation successful.

On behalf of our foundation, I ask that all of you reading this President’s Column think about how our school and community have benefitted you and your family. A good way to say “thank you” for that is making a contribution to our foundation before year’s end. You can do so online by clicking right here, or you can send a check via U.S. Mail to the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation, P.O. Box 351, Shenandoah, IA 51601. We promise to use your gift to enhance the educational opportunities of our students and teachers.

Lastly, our board of directors sincerely wishes you and your families a very joyous and blessed Christmas. Enjoy your time together, rediscovering the real reason for Christmas.

Thank you for your support and encouragement. And thanks for being partners with us in this foundation. Until next year!
