SHENANDOAH, Iowa -- The mission statement of Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation states we will support and expand educational opportunities for students in the Shenandoah Community School District.

One way the foundation has been able to do that is by offering “mini-grants” to staff. We’re funding those from the donations we’ve received from alumni, alum-nots and other supporters of the Shenandoah schools – people from right...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa -- Friends of the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation, please join us in helping our school district become a “Beacon of Light” shining all over the 4-state area and beyond.

We are entering the “funding game” late.  Foundations like ours, supporting a local school system, have been in existence elsewhere for some time.

In Shenandoah, we have just started the process in the last two years.  But we are now commit...

FARRAGUT, Iowa --  When I was asked to join the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation board, my first reaction was that I wasn't really connected to the Shenandoah school system and that it wasn't something I needed to do.

But I have a great deal of respect both for the people who asked me to join and the people who were going to be on the board, so I said yes.

There are three things that have helped me in serving on this foundat...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa – The very popular, retired Shenandoah teacher Barbara Cunningham has long been like the herd boss holding all SHS alumni together.  Now she has also taken a big step in helping current students, teachers and staff and those of the future – with a $5,000 donation to the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation.

“I’ll tell you what this is – it’s my birthday present to myself,” said Cunningham, who taught 35 years i...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa -- The Class of 1967 celebrated our 50th reunion last fall. Time and again the comment made was, how did this happen?

Conversations with classmates and long-time friends recalled numerous events and relationships that at their core tie us to the Shenandoah Community School District.

While observing interactions, I thought about the kids in our school today.  What will they take with them when they leave the She...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa --  I was truly honored to be asked to be a part of the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation in the very early stages of its existence.

When Bob Sweeney came to me that morning, I thought what a great way to give back to our schools through sharing my time. So here I am as a member of a very strong and vital foundation serving the Shenandoah school system. Why did I become a part of this group? My answer would...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa, Sept. 22, 2017 –- The family of the late farmwife, mother, musician, artist and community leader Isabel Spears, who lived just south of Shenandoah, has given our Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation its first significantly large donation -- $20,000.

The family gift is announced by Roger Spears, of Durham, N.C., a 1972 Shenandoah High School graduate and recently retired architect, in memory of his m...

SHENANDOAH, Iowa -- It was great to see so many of you return for Homecoming and ShenFest this year.  I enjoyed attending some of the class reunions and connecting with some of our alumni.  I appreciated the opportunity to share some of the good news about the progress the district is making.

Here are some of the stories I was able to share with district alumni, their families and friends:

SHENANDOAH, Iowa – The news here, as you’ve probably read on the home page of this website, is that the family of the late Isabel Spears has donated $20,000 in her honor to the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation to help enhance the music programs in our schools.

So let’s start thinking about how we can properly celebrate that gift. I propose a concert.

Isabel, who died at 97 in the summer of 2016, was by all accounts one of th...
